Surrey County Council has applied to the Planning Inspectorate in Bristol for permission to place six large, artificial play structures on common land at Newlands Corner. Details of the application are in the attached documents. Our detailed thoughts on the issues will be on website in the next few days.
There is a deadline of 7 July for comment/objections on the proposals.
If you need to make representations urgently (e.g. going on holiday), before you do so, read part 4 of the additional attached document “Common Land Consents Policy”. This indicates what should be taken into account by the inspector and so any representations should be based on these factors – basically what benefits will these structures give to the neighbourhood, the population in general and for the Newlands Corner site. (We can’t think of any.) And remember to include your name and address.

Leave Newlands corner alone to its natural beauty, and allow children to explore its trees and hedgerows and get to know nature, they do not need wooden structures or any thing else to appreciate the wonders of nature .

If the children want `play structures`, take them to a playground. That is not what Newlands Corner is. It is an area for appreciating nature and the beautiful surroundings.

Well said, people seem to have forgotten what the countryside is all about!

Play structures should be in playgrounds not beauty spots, SCC leave our beauty spots alone. Children should be allowed to learn and enjoy such a beautiful area.

Leave Newlands Corner as it is, beautiful and natural as nature intended for children to explore and use ther own imagination for play, there are plenty of ‘play structures’ around in playgrounds and large ‘play structures’ in nearby Stoke Park, we don’t need to ruin Newlands Corner with another. The costs could surely be put to much better use.

I have seen no reference to the historic reasons for preservation of Newlands Corner. I believe it had an RAF connexion and I have a personal family record of it’s invaluable use as a holding centre for British Army units assembling, under canvas, prior to the D- Day landings in WW2.

Newlands Corner is one of the few natural play areas with beautiful trees to climb, fields to run and play in, and should not become a modern fairground. Natural beauty is hard to find, leave it alone, and let the children learn about the trees, and how to enjoy natural beauty.

As others mentiined! Leave Newlands corner alone, children need nature, exploring and trees to climb. They do not need a playground! Newlands corner has lovely countryside.

Dear Sirs at the Planning Inspectorate,
It has come to my attention that there are plans to build a large structure within an area of natural beauty, Newlands Corner.
What possible benefits could this bring to the area?
We frequently visit the area with out children to go for a walk, meet friends or just relax on the hillside enjoying the view. This would be ruined by unnecessary development with the sole purpose to exploit the countryside in order to create additional revenue.
There are plenty of amusement areas for children in the surrounding areas.
I have not heard of any request for additional play areas from the local residents and in reality many people who enjoy the quiet nature of Newlands corner I suspect will be put off by the play structures.
In addition to unnecessary building in an area of natural beauty, this will put some of the wildlife at risk totally unnecessarily. We all have a duty to conserve areas of outstanding beauty for future generations rather than building unnecessary and unrequested structures.

will they put a playground next to Stonehenge next? people go to areas like this to admire the natural landscape and enjoy the peace and quiet – the cafes seem to be producing good food already and there is no need for a large restaurant and playground…..the grown ups will go less and it will end up like IKEA….

I object to the potential changes and charges being proposed. This is an area of outstanding natural beauty, there are lots of other places for child’s play and the added issue of charging people will certainly encourage movement to other locations which is totally out of order on the basis it’s a perfect location right now

This is an outstanding beautiful place, we don’t need any children’s play areas, do not spoil what we have got in Surrey.

I have lived in Clandon all my life and recall many happy days playing in the woods and on the hill at Newlands Corner exploring the natural world as a child. I have since been a nanny for 30 years taking children there to learn about and enjoy the countryside, respect wildlife and just to play using their imagination . They do not need artificial play structures in this site as there are many playgrounds close by like in Clandon, Send, Ripley, & Burpham to name a few.It would be a huge mistake to destroy the natural beauty of Newlands corner by building first play structures then possibly after, an apparently needed larger cafe, because of the play area and all that goes with that. Bigger parking?? all taking away the natural habitats of the wildlife which live there. The outstanding beauty of the country would be lost forever just to seemingly increase revenue. perhaps the money to achieve this and to then maintain it would be better spent, protecting the wildlife, supporting the local NHS and social care issues and maintaining the local roads which not surprisingly would also suffer under pressure of any increased traffic from non resident should the project go a head. WE don’t need nor want it. Please leave the country side alone.

Newlands Corner is a beautiful natural place which should be preserved not destroyed by commercialisation which is what SCC seems intent on doing. Save what few places like Newlands that we have, don’t destroy it.

Please do not destroy the natural playground of Newlands corner by making it a plastic unnatural playgound. Children need play areas-we have a fantastic play area here already -take the unreal play equipment to builtup areas that have no natural spaces.
