The deadline for objections to the Surrey County Council Commons Consent application has now passed. Thank you to everyone for the amazing response. Once we know how many objections have been received or have any further information we will post on this site.
Thank you!!
You can still view the documents we produced regarding this application.
Click here to read How to Object and What you can say.
Also please remember to personalise your objection slightly. Mention your emotional attachment to Newlands Corner and why it is important for you and your family. This will then carry much more weight with the Planning Authorities.
Thank you!
You will have heard about the significant controversy surrounding Surrey County Council’s (SCC) proposals to develop Newlands Corner. We need to object to its proposals at every stage to stop this commercialisation. SCC’s first step is to introduce car park charges and for this it needs to erect parking charge machines on the site. On 14 September 2016, SCC submitted an application to the Planning Inspectorate for the introduction of three parking charge machines onto the common. They need to do this as Newlands Corner is registered common land.
This may not sound like much but the implications of this are very significant.
The Planning Inspector must be shown that this application is inappropriate, would lead to the degradation of Newlands Corner and is deeply unpopular.
Every single objection counts, so please send yours in by 21st October 2016 and encourage others to do the same.
Please send objections:-
By email to: commonlandcasework@pins.gsi.gov.uk
By post to: The Planning Inspectorate, Commons Team, 3F Temple Quay House, Temple Quay, Bristol. BS1 6PN
The three documents below will give you more detail and some ideas on what to say in your objections. (They are all in both Word and PDF format).

We are SO SO very much against these proposals – leave Newlands Corner as is……a beautiful, scenic and serene corner of Surrey!

With increasing congestion and commercialisation throughout Surrey, Newlands Corner offers nature at its best – an unspoilt open landscape, a wonderful view and an area for children to take exercise and learn more about the countryside around them. introducing car parking charges may make it unaffordable for those families who live in small homes/apartments who benefit the most from this wonderful place and the provision of further “amenities” would add further unacceptable pressures on already stretched family finances. PLEASE KEEP IT FREE FOR ALL and don’t destroy the natural beauty of this area.

There are few enough places of natural beauty within Surrey that may be enjoyed free of charge and without hindrance. The beauties of nature should belong to all of us, should remain unsullied and not turned into commercial cenres. Newlands Corner is an example of such an unspoiled area and should remain as such. Proposed plans are therefore inappropriate and risk damaging its existing natural beauty and the introduction of car parking charges and further money-making amenities will make it more like a theme park than the beauty spot we have all enjoyed for many decades.

Yet again money and self interest raise their ugly heads and the persons who have put forward this application should hang their heads in shame because they are willing to spoil this beautiful area for what? The sake of a fatter pension fund when they retire from the Council? They are an utter disgrace to their office.

This area has been an unspoilt area for many years. People come here to admire the views. walk their dogs, walk with their families and perhaps enjoy a drink at the small cafe. To introduce play areas and a large retail/refreshment area as is just a money making exercise by SCC. There are plenty of play areas providing entertainment for children and families so there is no need to develop an area of outstanding beauty it will simply spoil the area completely.

What is wrong with Surrey County Council! Newlands Corner is an area of outstanding natural beauty. Why destroy an area that brings so much joy to young and old alike. It is just a money making exercise to compensate their lack of business acumen. Anyone can just go there to enjoy the views so why discriminate all for making extra money! It will be a sad day when visitors just have a passing view as they drive past and glance back at what was a distant memory!

It is hard to believe that SCC want to completely destroy this natural, beautiful area. Surely the natural beauty is what attracts people in the first place. Why plan play areas, restaurants and other ‘amenities’ when we visit places like this to get away from the commercialism these represent. I travel this route daily and the expectation to increase traffic further in this area is extremely unsafe and I can only see it will have a detrimental effect on the surrounding area and villages. I just hope that those seeking the permission to develop the area, and those in the position to give this permission, will very carefully consider the objections placed before them.

I have been going to Newlands Corner since the early 1980s with my young children. They loved it there, and now take their own children. The joy of the Newlands Corner is that it is unchangeable from generation to generation. It’s a haven of beauty for all, and it makes me so angry that SCC want to ruin it all, just for profit.

SCC seems completely out of touch to the wants of ordinary people, not unlike Mr Cameron and Brexit ! Newlands Corner is a breathtaking beauty spot to be enjoyed by all, children should be allowed to be free to run, climb tree, go blackberrying and enjoy the wildlife. Dog walkers and ramblers meet here as do other who just want the tranquility. This area should never be smartened up or commercialized. Please think again..

I don’t know if Newlands Corner can be regarded as an “Asset of Community Status” – I am not a lawyer or anyone who knows about these things! Is this worth investigating? Incidentally, I have written to the Inspectorate with my objections and had a personal, non-generic reply, which is refreshing and, have found out which of my local Cllrs support this ridiculous and flawed scheme and told them I will be withholding my vote for them in future. I live in Merrow and we back onto the Downs, all our roads onto the Downs, will be affected by people parking who will not want to pay the charges.

I voted for Cllr Ellwood in the SCC elections last time (who represents Merrow and my area in Burpham) and who supports these proposals. No more. By the way, if any of you emailed him, after responding to you (no doubt a cursory response the same as I received) he has deleted your emails. He told me himself. I still have the email! I don’t expect him to keep them for ever, but I find it puzzling that he gets rid of them in the middle of a live issue.

Please don’t spoil what we have up at Newlands Corner. The wonderful thing about Newlands Corner is it is free to see the wonderful views and have a short walk with visitors, Grandparents without all the unnatural trappings for Children’s entertainment. There are not many places near by for a young family to walk in a completely natural surroundings to run free also without a parking meter in sight. It would be a crying shame to spoil the area with meters new build right in front . Absolutely dreadful.

The people who are intending to vandalise Newlands Corner must beurbanites who have no interest in our land but can only think in terms of profit and what they get out of it.
We have been visiting Newlands Corner for decades both as walkers passing through and as visitors to soak up the calm, serene atmosphere of the place. Our children (and their children) have enjoyedthe glorious views, flying kites, playing games, walking and enjoying the atmosphere. It has been amazing how much wild life we have come across. Is it necessary to drag town playgrounds to an area which naturally entertains children. If this area goes it will be yet another diminuation of our glorious countryside for the sake of……..what? The ranger’s barn provides really good information of the area. You just need to visit it to find out how informative it is to so many people.I have not even touched upon parking charges. What a disgrace! It will stop people on limited means from enjoying what is their right ie to enjoy their,,,our…newlands Corner. Please do not do it.
