Surrey County Council have announced that from Spring 2016 there will be parking charges levied when we park at Newlands Corner. There are conflicting reports of exactly what these charges will be. A new sign at Newlands Corner says that the first 20 minutes will be free-of-charge, followed by £1 per hour, with a maximum charge of £4. However, we have seen documents that contradict this.
We are attempting to gain clarification on various points relating to these new charges. These include detail from visitor surveys that have apparently been undertaken; confirmation of when charges were apparently previously levied for parking at Newlands and also what exactly the charging levels will be.

I don’t understand why you consider parking charges to be so controversial. The Guildford area needs to start getting a grip of the huge numbers of cars used in the area, and making drivers pay directly for the use of car parks is as logical as making bus passengers pay for bus journeys. I don’t drive but I don’t expect free bus travel. Where I do have sympathy is with respect to consultation, which should always be properly carried out.

This is because it directly disadvantages those on the lowest incomes – working families and pensioners, mainly – to the extent that it effectively deprives them of an amenity which has always been free to use, despite Cllr Goodman’s lies to Cabinet about charges formerly having been imposed.

Are you seriously going to argue that the reason that people are arguing against car parking charges is because they’ll work against so-called ‘working families’? I am part of a working family, and I don’t drive, and I don’t see why drivers of any type should get free parking at an amenity like this unless they’re disabled. You don’t get free parking in town do you? I *completely* agree with the principle of charging for cars. It doesn’t have to be a fortune. Or maybe you could always support a campaign to massively increase bus subsidies in return, because that would really benefit ‘working families’ and pensioners.
